Next sunday I will be DJ’ing at a cool (the last?!) open air party in Cologne – and the guest of honor is none other than the great DJ and producer Dâm-Funk from Los Angeles!
I first came across Dâm-Funk in 2009 at the Stones Throw label tour showcase in Cologne’s Luxor club. He managed to stand out even from that highly varied line-up, which saw a VJ/DJ hiphop show from Peanut Butter Wolf as well as a hilariously nutty live cover of “White Rabbit” by James Pants. Dâm-Funk played a stunning DJ set of pure, far-out 80s funk and boogie, which really nobody dug at the time. I for one was loving it.
I saw him a second time at the Splash Festival 2012, and again it was great. Among others, he played “It’s U” by ESP – one of my alltime faves – and enhanced his set with singing and playing the Keytar. Nowadays, his productions never really leave my vinyl crates, and I like to follow Dâm-Funk on Instagram, where he shines with strong and positive posts. One of the good guys, and I’m stoked to be able to share a deck with the man for once.
Said DJ booth will also be manned by Berlin’s Shacke One, Hans Nieswandt, Thomas Gebhardt and other Cologne fellas – plus Hade and I with a back to back set full of funk, disco and house between then and now. “Cologne Is For Lovers” goes down Sunday, September 3rd, from 12 pm to 12 am in the Oskar-Jaeger-Straße 143, there will be a Beef Brothers burger truck and more – and a great ersatz location in case of bad weather!
